Saint Patrick's Day Facts:
-- St. Patrick was a missionary, credited with converting the Irish to Christianity back in the 400's. - He used the shamrock as a metaphor to explain the concept of the Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). - Saint Patrick's mission in Ireland lasted for over 20 years. He died on March 17, AD 461. That day has been commemorated as St. Patrick's Day ever since. The day's spirit is to celebrate the universal baptization of Ireland.Though originally a Catholic holy day, St. Patrick's Day has evolved into more of a secular holiday. Nice to know: -The St. Patrick's Day custom came to America in 1737. That was the first year St. Patrick's Day was publicly celebrated in this country, in Boston. - Ireland's largest Church is St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. It reaches a lofty 300ft (91.44m) in length. - The longest bar in Ireland, built in 1955, is the Grandstand Bar at the Galway Racecourse, measuring an impressive 210ft (64m) in length. |
